A car owner's manual is next important thing to have in your vehicle after basic tools and spare tire. It provides information about the car and how to operate the different functions it has. The instructions the manual has on how to properly maintain the vehicle is important. Finding car owner's manual online to download is rare. It is just amazing why vehicle manufacturers are so selfish in making it available online for free.
It was a good thing there is the 1998 Ford Mustang owner's manual/automotive repair manuals downloadable on PDF format. The downloadable manual has two separate files. One will be for general maintenance information of the car. There are two options for maintenance schedules. Normal schedule or severe duty schedule are the options. The criteria for severe duty are as follows and quoted here:
"Follow the Severe Duty Schedule if your driving habits frequently include one or more of the following conditions:
Driving at top speeds for long distances during hot conditions.Short trips in areas of high humidity or freezing conditions.Towing and/or carrying heavy loads.Police, taxi and delivery usage.Driving in dusty/sandy environments for long periods." Out of curiosity, the question on this would be, what if the normal schedule of maintenance could not be followed'? If normal maintenance is not followed under normal driving conditions, will the Mustang not be considered to be on severe duty? This should be considered for any car at that. Any car not being properly maintained on normal schedule is under severe duty All car owners manual have record keeping notes that aids in keeping up with schedules. There are some vehicle/haynes repair manuals owners that follow the schedule and make notes religiously maybe up to the second year only. Busy schedules at work are reasons for neglecting maintenance. It is therefore strongly recommended that should there be long intervals between maintenance, it is better to follow the severe duty schedule.
Car manufacturers change the format of their cars' owner's manual. What remains constant to check for maintenance are engine oil, water reservoir, brake fluid, steering fluid, tires and tire pressure, accessories, washer fluid, working lights and instrumentation. These are basic checks that could be done by a car owner that would not need special training. Owner's manuals would have the information and specifications that should be closely followed. Anything in excess is not good and that goes also for oils, fluids and pressure required on cars. If the indicator levels for this go below the minimum, it will not be good to operate the car under normal conditions. Drive the car carefully until you reach a place where the fluids or pressure can be topped. For motor oil or steering fluid, if it is way below the minimum level, don't drive or even start the car. Under those conditions it could severely damage the car parts involved. Lubrication will not be sufficient to insulate' the surface of metal parts during operation.
