The First Ever Ford Transit Connect Taxi Has Arrived in the United States
The CEO of Boston Cab Dispatch, Brett Barenholtz, was extremely enthusiastic when he received the keys to the first U.S. Transit Connect Taxi, expressing that he cannot wait to put the new taxi to work.
"Transit Connect Taxi offers important features for our passengers and our drivers," said Barenholtz at the auto show. "It has more legroom and cargo space, better fuel efficiency, and makes the entire operation more economical," said Barenholtz, according to the press release.
This delivery was made possible thanks to Sentry Ford in Medfold, Massachusetts, the delivering dealer, working with Boston Cab Dispatch to merge the new cab into the company's existing fleet. The taxi was fully-stocked by Creative Mobile Technologies, a company based in Long Island, New York, that provides equipment such as payment processing and passenger information systems in the taxi. In fact, the taxis will soon be on their way to other New England taxi companies. George Summers, president of USA Taxi, recently added a Transit Connect vehicle to his fleet of taxis as well as Bill Scalzi, president of Metro Taxi in West Haven, Connecticut and Marco Henry, president of The Yellow Cab Company in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Scalzi and Henry both ordered compressed natural gas versions of the Transit Connect Taxi to add to their already large fleets.
"We've always driven Ford vehicles, Crown Vics and Escape Hybrids" said Summers in the PRNewswire press release. "Now, we're adding the Transit Connect Taxi. It has great dimensions and fuel efficiency that will work well on the road."
More exciting news for the Transit Connect Taxi is that in April, the Licensing Division of the Boston Police Department will be using the vehicle. This will make Boston the first city in the country to do so. In order to be approved for use, the taxi had to meet basic size requirements for passenger headroom, legroom and cargo storage.
According to Mark Cohen, Licensing Division director, "Transit Connect fits the bill. The size, shape and configuration of this unique vehicle make it comfortable for both driver and passengers."
Features of the Ford Transit Connect Taxi:
The Ford Transit Connect Taxi has a small perimeter and tall shape that makes it easy to drive and park. The 2.0-liter I-4 engine gets 21 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway. This is an estimated 30 percent improvement in fuel economy when compared to classic V8 sedan taxis. The Transit Connect Taxi is also available with an engine preparation package for conversion to compressed natural gas and liquefied propane gas.
Other features of the Transit Connect Taxi include a repositioned second-row seat that provides more legroom as well as grab handles and rear air conditioning/heat vents with passenger controls.
The new and improved features don't just please the passenger however. For the taxi driver, there is a new rear view camera and back-up sensor, a wiring block connector to power upfitted accessories as well as a durable battery. The vehicles are currently available for order, so consumers should expect to see them popping up all around the United States during the coming months.
"We're excited to see Transit Connect Taxi in service in Boston," said Kevin Koswick, director of Ford's North American Fleet Operations in the PRNewswire press relase. "Ford is committed to offering new solutions and maintaining our leadership as America's No. 1 taxi provider."
