The BMW 6 Series
BMW produced several generations of executive coupsknown as the BMW 6 series. The first of the 6 series, the E24, came from the E12and E285 Series of 4-door sedans. BMW launched the E24in 1976; it replaced the 3.0CS and 3.0CSi (E9). In 2003, BMW released the new E63/E64, which got its base from the E605 Series sedan chassis and was available as a coup and convertible. The E63/E64lasted from 2003 through to 2010 and included such models as the 645ci(2004-2005), the 650i(2006) and the 630i(2007). There is no 6 Series car manufactured for model year 2011. The third generation 6 series F12(convertible) and F13(coup) however, will have their dbut in 2011 at the Shanghai and New York Auto Shows, for the model year 2012. The F12and F13will share a platform and some engines with 7 Series (F01) and 5 Series (F10).

BMW manufactured the E246 Series from 1976 to 1989. In 1983, BMW took the M88/3 from the BMW M1and put in the E24chassis and created the M6(M635CSi). The M6had a double overhead camshaft(DOHC) 24-valve 3452cc, 286 PS engine with a top speed of 255 km/h and a close-ratio manual transmission.
The E63/E646 Series debuted in 2003 and continued through to 2010. For this generation of the BMW 6 Series, transmission options were either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, called the "Steptronic". The high-performance M6came with the 7-speed Getrag SMG III single-clutch semi-automatic transmission. The SMG III was also an option for the V8-engined 6-Series until after 2008. The SMG III used an electronically controlled clutch, which offered the responsiveness of a manual and the mindless ease of an automatic.
Used BMW 6 Series Transmissions
Despite the special features of the SMG III transmission, it creates a jerky ride and makes everyday driving difficult. For this reason, if you are thinking of buying a used BMW 6 Series transmission, the SMG III is not necessarily the best one to buy. It is probably better to buy a used traditional 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual. Between 2003 and 2010, during the time of its second generation, most BMW 6 Series cars were usually equipped with the traditional automatic transmission. The traditional automatic however, didn't come as a standard feature on the 6 Series until 2010. The manual transmission became an option at the same time. Since they have been more popular for some time, it iseasier to find used 6 Series traditional automatic transmission to buy rather than manual ones.
When buying a used 6 Series transmission, it is a good idea to do business with a store (online or otherwise) that specializes in BMW parts. BMW parts stores are very careful to offer only the highest quality used or recycled parts to their clients, in keeping with their customers' high taste and standards.
